Updates!
After a bit of a quiet time at the Laserbrick office we are happy to announce that our valued team members Sybren and Marcel got back safely from their backpack trip to Japan. After ding-dong ditching at nintendo’s and playing every single Pop ‘n Music arcade machine, they returned home, rich of new experiences and a bit less rich overall. Read all about their adventures on their blog.
Between our day jobs and freelancing, we have been working on a project for ‘Bert Bever‘ which will be released very soon! Read all about it on it’s game page
This week we have also been visiting our old university the NHL where we had the pleasure to meet some enthusiastic prospective gamedesign students. We suggested a project to create a prototype and we hope that some of these students will pick it up. We are looking forward to creating something awesome with these guys!

Thank you all for coming and drinking our beer. If you couldn’t make it, you’re always welcome to visit us another time at the ‘Johannastate’.
Now for some black and white goodness:
New office!
As of a week ago, Laserbrick is housed in the ‘Johannastate’ in Leeuwarden, an estate in a rustic place near the heart of Leeuwarden, surrounded by a lot of green and a cafe around the corner. Bit by bit we are gathering furniture, desks and decoration to make this place our own. Thank you Grendel Games for accomodating our trash bin the last half year, but now it’s time for him to move to his new home!
The address can be found under ‘contact’. There will be an opening soon and there will be drinks!

Gamification of learning
I love designing games. What I love even more is playing games. What I don’t like so much is to-do lists, tasks and other things that keep me from doing the previous two things. In college you tend to do a lot of those less interesting things: Writing endless reports, documenting everything you do, justifying all those actions. It’s just not very sexy and rewarding. Today I did a presentation about the gamification of learning and I discovered that people like this idea. Here’s what I mean:
Gaining levels is awesome, getting achievements is awesome, accumulating a score of some sort is awesome. These are things that somehow find their way into a lot of games made these days, which makes me glad! It is a very easy way to increase replayability, satisfaction and e-peen bragging rights for almost any type of game. So I decided to apply this standalone gameplay mechanic to a student’s document used for growth and reflection. Wouldn’t it be cool to audition for a job in game design saying: ‘Hi, I’m a level 16 programmer and I got C++, C# and objective C proficiency. Here’s my character sheet’ .It would also be somewhat geeky, but hey, game designers are allowed to be geeky right?
So here I present to you, the real life character sheet:
New website is up
Not that there was an old website… Anyway, as of today, you can follow all the news about Laserbrick, learn about the games we created, read about the projects we are working on and hopefully find a lot of information which might be useful to you: gamer, game designer, graphic artist, programmer, level designer, potential client.
What you will probably notice is that we are very open about our development process, concepts, ideas and business. This is because we believe that this will inspire and help other people to make even better games than we do. Sure, ideas and concepts can be stolen, but a good game is more than just a good concept.
That is all! Now I need to fill the rest of the website. See you around.
Equalized
Genre: platform/rhythm
Platform: iPhone and iPod touch
Status: Released
Catchphrase:“Jump, roll and dive through jungle, urban and other themed levels to the beat of YOUR music.”
Story
Man was just a regular guy, who likes music and likes his mp3 player a lot. But after a series of unfortunate events, everything has changed for this simple man, and now he is Running Man. The story behind equalized.
Gameplay
A platform game for the lazy man, you don’t have to run, you only need to jump and roll. While running man is running through the levels, all different kinds of obstacles cross his path. You need to time your jumps and rolls to the music to get over these obstacles, jump over gaps, slide through narrow pipes and roll under dangerous, low hanging stuff. Besides the basic jump and roll, you can also make combinations to get past harder obstacles.
All your actions are timed to the music of the level and the good part is that you can play this game with your own music! Just load up the songs you like and the levels are automatically generated based on the music. We also have other fancy stuff like dynamic difficulty, pickups (or tapups rather), track records and particles!
Features
- A combination of rhythm and platform gameplay.
- Get the highest score on your favorite tracks!
- Play levels based on your own music!
- 4 difficulties ranging from easy to insane.
- 6 different themes, all with their own obstacles to overcome.
- The better you play, the harder it gets, but the prettier the eye candy and the higher your score.
